The DHL Stormers produced a remarkable performance to defeat Bristol Bears 49–12 at DHL Stadium, overcoming a permanent red card and a spell with just 13 players to finish the match with a flurry of tries. Here are five things that stood out.

1. The scrum laid the foundation
The Stormers’ dominance at scrum time was a defining feature of the opening half. They repeatedly put Bristol under pressure, earning penalties and creating opportunities to attack from close range. Their ability to turn set-piece superiority into attacking momentum helped establish the 21–7 half-time lead.

2. Senatla set the tone
Seabelo Senatla opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a superb individual finish. Finding a gap in midfield, he accelerated away from the Bristol defence to score in the right-hand corner. It was an early statement of intent, and his contribution was recognised when he was named the Official Man of the Match.

3. Discipline threatened to derail the Stormers
JJ Kotzé’s red card was the match’s major turning point. Initially issued as a 20-minute red card, the sanction was upgraded to a permanent dismissal, leaving the Stormers with 14 players for the remainder of the contest. Leolin Zas’s subsequent yellow card briefly reduced them to 13. Bristol had an opportunity to capitalise, but the Stormers’ defensive resolve prevented the visitors from building sustained momentum.

4. Roche’s double kept Bristol at arm’s length
Jonathan Roche’s two tries were crucial to the Stormers’ control of the contest. His first, in the 29th minute, restored the home side’s 14-point advantage after Bristol had scored. His second came in the 53rd minute, just three minutes after Bristol’s try, stopping the visitors from gaining further momentum. The timing of both scores was as important as the finishing.

5. The finish was a statement of intent
The Stormers grew stronger as the match progressed, despite their numerical disadvantage. Warrick Gelant scored in the 72nd minute, Andre-Hugo Venter followed two minutes later after excellent counter-rucking turned defence into attack, and Zas crossed in the 78th minute. With Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converting all seven Stormers tries, the home side finished with a commanding 49–12 victory.
The verdict
The Stormers combined set-piece power, attacking quality and resilience to overcome a difficult disciplinary situation. Bristol had opportunities to make their numerical advantage count, but the home side’s response in the final quarter turned a competitive contest into a comprehensive victory.
Final score: DHL Stormers 49–12 Bristol Bears.
Official Man of the Match: Seabelo Senatla.
