South Africa’s four Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) franchises face important challenges this weekend as they look to build momentum before the competition pauses for the Nations Championship in November.
For South Africa’s franchises, this final round before the Nations Championship break offers more than just an opportunity to collect points. It is a chance to build confidence, address weaknesses and carry positive momentum into the next phase of the URC season.
Stormers wary of dangerous Ulster
The DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls will have home advantage as they look to strengthen their positions on the log, while the 10bet Lions and Hollywoodbets Sharks face demanding assignments on European soil.
The action kicks off on Friday night when the Lions take on Glasgow Warriors in Scotland. Saturday sees the Stormers host Ulster in Cape Town, the Bulls welcome the Scarlets to Pretoria, and the Sharks travel to Limerick to face Munster.
With the competition set to resume in December, valuable log points will be up for grabs across all four fixtures.
Lions face formidable Glasgow challenge
The 10bet Lions face one of their toughest assignments of the season when they meet Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun Stadium on Friday night.
Glasgow sit second on the log and remain unbeaten after three victories and a draw in their opening four matches. The Lions, meanwhile, have endured a difficult spell on the road, losing their last two outings across the URC and Investec Champions Cup.
However, Ivan van Rooyen’s side have already shown they can compete with the competition’s heavyweights. Their opening-round victory over Leinster, followed by a convincing win against the Ospreys, demonstrated the potential within the Johannesburg outfit.
The Lions will need to rediscover that form against a Glasgow side that has scored freely while maintaining a solid defensive record.
The Scottish outfit have shown they can be vulnerable under pressure, with narrow victories over Munster and Benetton highlighting their ability to grind out results rather than dominate every contest.
The Lions will have to produce a disciplined performance, limit their errors and take their opportunities if they are to leave Scotland with a major result before the break.
The DHL Stormers return to Cape Town looking to extend their winning run when they host Ulster at DHL Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
John Dobson’s side have won their last two matches and occupy fourth position on the log. However, their recent victory over the Scarlets was far from straightforward, with two late tries required to secure the result.
Ulster may be languishing in 13th place, but their performances suggest they should not be underestimated. The Irish side have scored at least 26 points in each of their matches this season and pushed the Bulls hard in Pretoria last weekend.
The Stormers will therefore need to be switched on defensively, particularly against an Ulster attack that has shown it can create scoring opportunities.
The Cape side have looked increasingly effective at both ends of the field, but their recent defensive lapses will be a concern heading into Saturday’s encounter.
Ulster, meanwhile, will arrive determined to turn promising performances into victories and improve their position on the standings.
With home advantage and a strong recent run behind them, the Stormers will be favourites, but they cannot afford to take their opponents lightly.
Bulls look to maintain Loftus momentum
The Vodacom Bulls will be eager to continue their strong home form when they welcome the Scarlets to Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Johan Ackermann’s side occupy third place on the log and will start as favourites against a Scarlets outfit sitting 14th after winning just one of their opening four matches.
However, the Welsh visitors showed last weekend that they can cause problems for the best teams in the competition, pushing the Stormers to the limit with direct running, sharp line breaks and effective support play.
The Scarlets’ attacking threat means the Bulls will need to be disciplined on defence and ensure their forwards establish control.
When the Bulls get their forward pack and backline working in unison, they have the ability to put opposition defences under enormous pressure. Their challenge will be to maintain that cohesion throughout the match.
The Scarlets have struggled defensively this season, an area the Bulls will look to exploit as they seek another home victory and valuable points before the international break.
Sharks brace for stern Munster test
The Hollywoodbets Sharks face a difficult assignment at Thomond Park when they take on Munster in Limerick on Saturday evening.
JP Pietersen’s side have made an encouraging start to their URC campaign, winning three of their four matches to sit fifth on the log. They also head into the fixture after securing a valuable away victory over LOU Rugby in the EPCR Challenge Cup.
Munster, currently ninth, have experienced a less consistent start, recording one win, one draw and two defeats. However, their results suggest they remain a tough side to beat, with their biggest URC defeat this season coming by just six points.
The Sharks will need to bring their attacking intent to one of European rugby’s most challenging venues.
Their pace in the backline, direct running and willingness to play expansively have made them a dangerous attacking outfit. If they can combine that ambition with defensive discipline and control at the breakdown, they will have a genuine opportunity to secure another important away result.
Munster will be equally determined to build momentum in front of their home supporters, setting up a potentially tight and physical contest.
For the Sharks, a positive result would provide an ideal platform heading into the December resumption, when they will look to make the most of their upcoming home fixtures.
