Cape Town – The Stormers are enjoying a remarkable season, having won all eight of their matches across competitions so far. Whether by design or necessity, they appear far more settled and composed than in recent years.
Since lifting the inaugural United Rugby Championship trophy and of course being the losing finalists in the second edition, the team has struggled to recapture that same devastating form. Something seemed to be missing, and they often flattered to deceive. This season, however, there’s been a noticeable shift. At the outset, the Stormers adopted a more pragmatic approach, and it has paid dividends.
Key attacking stars were unavailable due to Springbok commitments, leaving a significant void in the squad. The absence of players like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse, and Manie Libbok – now plying his trade in Japan- meant the team had to adjust its game plan without much of its usual attacking arsenal.
Yet John Dobson and his coaching staff have found ways to not just grind out victories, but to also build up momentum and belief with every victory – often impressively so on the road. Their adaptability and resilience have ensured that the Stormers remain unbeaten, signaling a team rediscovering its winning edge.
The Stormers have also bolstered their squad with a blend of quality and experience. The arrivals of Ruan Ackermann and Cobus Reinach have added steel and composure, while the coaching staff continue to blood promising youngsters such as Imaad Khan. It’s a balance that not only strengthens the present but also secures the future, ensuring the team remains competitive on all fronts.
The combination of Cobus Reinach and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, both of whom have impressed in Springbok colours, will undoubtedly strengthen the Stormers. Their presence not only elevates the team’s performance but also contributes positively to the broader national cause, ensuring continuity and cohesion between franchise and country.
The Stormers put in a dominant 42–21 victory over French giants La Rochelle in the Champions Cup on Saturday, 13 December 2025, in Gqeberha.
The “home” side – the usual Cape Town venue was not available – exploded out of the blocks, scoring two tries in the opening ten minutes through the brilliance of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who set up Leolin Zas with a pinpoint cross-kick before crossing himself. Cobus Reinach controlled the tempo at scrumhalf, while Andre-Hugo Venter and Dylan Maart added further tries to secure the bonus point.
La Rochelle, fielding a youthful side, showed resilience with three tries of their own, but the Stormers’ power and precision proved too much. Feinberg-Mngomezulu capped off a standout performance with multiple scores, underlining his growing influence at both franchise and national level.
Coach John Dobson praised the result but admitted the team lost focus after their fast start, noting that “winning at home in Europe is non-negotiable.”
The Stormers look settled, pragmatic, and dangerous – sending a strong message to their rivals.
The Stormers’ unbeaten run has provided the perfect platform for what lies ahead. John Dobson’s side have laid a solid foundation for success in the business end of the season.
As the Champions Cup and United Rugby Championship reach their decisive stages, the Stormers’ positive start is more than just a streak of wins -it’s a launchpad for further success, both for the franchise and the national cause.
