Bafana Bafana begin their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Angola on Tuesday, 22 December at 19:00 (SA time) at the Stade de Marrakech. With group fixtures against Egypt (26 December) and Zimbabwe (29 December) still to come, it is imperative that South Africa start strongly to set the tone for the tournament.

After capturing the hearts of the nation in 2024 with their bronze medal finish, Bafana now aim higher: to win the tournament outright. Under the excellent guidance of Hugo Broos, their form has been consistent, and for millions of fans this has been the most stable and promising period in years.

Following the national team now comes with expectation. Supporters no longer hope for respectability—they demand excellence. Bafana Bafana are no longer considered a joke, and rightfully so. Their performances have improved to such an extent that both the team and the nation believe they can lift the AFCON trophy.

Form & Momentum

2024 Performance: Secured bronze in Côte d’Ivoire after defeating DR Congo in the 3rd-place playoff.

Qualification: Topped their group unbeaten with 14 points from six matches.

Milestone: Coach Hugo Broos reaches his 50th match in charge during this opener, a testament to his experience and rapport with the squad.

The Challenge Ahead

The ultimate test is to make history and win the title for the first time since the legendary Clive Barker-led class of 1996. That golden generation set the benchmark, but nearly three decades later, it is time for Bafana to step out of their shadow and carve a new legacy.

With momentum, belief, and tactical discipline, South Africa enter AFCON 2025 not just as participants, but as genuine contenders. The journey begins in Marrakech—and the nation will be watching
