Cape Town – Bafana Bafana had to dig deep to secure a 2–1 victory over Angola in their opening Group B clash at the Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa struck early through Oswin Appolis, whose composed finish gave the side the perfect start. But Angola refused to be intimidated by their more celebrated opponents, stringing together slick passes and looking the more confident side for long spells.
Their persistence paid off when Show buried a well-worked free kick in the 35th minute, leaving Ronwen Williams stranded and levelling the score at 1–1 before halftime.
The second half followed a similar script: Angola pressed hard, forcing Bafana onto the back foot and exposing moments of uncertainty in South Africa’s play. For much of the half, it seemed destined to end in a stalemate.
Then came the moment of brilliance. Lyle Foster, showcasing his undeniable talent, unleashed a thunderous strike that flew past the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal sparked wild celebrations and brought immense relief to the team and its supporters.
With South Africa tipped as one of the tournament favourites, this hard-earned win could prove crucial in setting the tone for their campaign and boosting confidence ahead of the next round.
