Stormers Edge Bulls in Derby Nail‑Biter as Late Try Seals Victory

By Marco Jacobs

The latest chapter of South African rugby’s fiercest rivalry delivered exactly what was expected: intensity, physicality, and a contest that hung in the balance until the final whistle. In front of a near‑capacity crowd, the Stormers and Bulls produced a gripping encounter worthy of the long‑standing north–south derby, with the Cape side ultimately emerging 13–8 victors.

With both teams fielding several Springbok stars, the match carried a distinct Test‑match feel from the opening whistle. Defensive lines were watertight, collisions were thunderous, and every small gain was fiercely contested. The Stormers settled quicker, controlling territory and possession in the early stages, and were rewarded with an 8–5 lead at halftime.

The Bulls, however, struck back immediately after the break. A well‑struck penalty levelled the scores at 8–8 and signaled their intent to wrestle momentum away from the hosts. What followed was a tense, cagey period where both sides struggled to find rhythm. Handling errors crept in, tactical kicks went astray, and the match became a battle of patience as much as power.

The Bulls had the clearest opportunities to take control, but uncharacteristically, Handré Pollard-usually one of the most reliable boots in world rugby-missed two kickable penalties. Each miss tightened the tension inside the stadium and kept the Stormers within striking distance.

Sensing the shift, the Stormers lifted their intensity in the final quarter. Wave after wave of pressure forced the Bulls onto the back foot, and eventually the dam wall cracked. A sustained attack down the left flank opened space for the decisive unconverted try- enough to reclaim the lead and, ultimately, secure the win.

The Bulls pushed hard in the dying minutes, but the Stormers’ defence, so often their trademark, held firm to close out a memorable derby victory.

In a match defined by fine margins, the Stormers’ composure under pressure and their ability to capitalise late proved the difference. For the Bulls, it will be a case of opportunities missed-literally and figuratively. But for the fans, this was another classic in a rivalry that continues to deliver drama, passion, and South African rugby at its uncompromising best.
