Southern neighbours, pushing South Africa to the limit in a contest filled with drama and defiance.
Bafana Bafana burst out of the blocks, breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute when a deflected effort found its way into the net. The opening goal for Bafana Bafana against Zimbabwe was scored by Tshepang Moremi in the 7th minute. It came via a deflected effort that wrong-footed the goalkeeper, giving South Africa the early lead.
South Africa’s early breakthrough seemed to set the tone, but Zimbabwe refused to wilt under pressure. Instead, The Warriors grew sharper and more determined after conceding, pressing higher and forcing Bafana onto the back foot. Their persistence was rewarded in the 17th minute when Tawanda Maswanhise produced a brilliant solo effort, weaving past defenders before firing home to level the score. It was a goal that embodied Zimbabwe’s resilience and reminded their Southern neighbours that this fixture is never straightforward.
After the break, Bafana Bafana came out with renewed intent, determined to reassert their dominance. Their pressure finally told in the 50th minute when Lyle Foster latched onto a clever through ball, showing composure to slot past the Zimbabwean goalkeeper. The goal restored South Africa’s advantage and briefly settled nerves, reminding fans of the attacking quality that this side can summon when it matters most.
Just as South Africa looked to be in control, disaster struck in the 73rd minute. A miscommunication at the back saw Aubrey Modiba inadvertently turn the ball into his own net, gifting Zimbabwe a lifeline and sending shockwaves through the Bafana camp. The Warriors, buoyed by the equalizer, pressed with renewed belief, threatening to snatch an unlikely result.
But fate swung back in South Africa’s favour late on. In the 82nd minute, VAR intervened to award a penalty after a clumsy challenge in the box. Oswin Appollis stepped up with nerves of steel, calmly dispatching the spot-kick to restore Bafana’s lead. It proved the decisive moment, sealing a 3–2 victory in a match that tested South Africa’s resilience and reminded fans that progress in AFCON is rarely straightforward.
Bafana Bafana will need to raise their level significantly in the Round of 16, where defensive lapses and wasted chances could prove far more costly against stronger opposition.
For now, it’s mission accomplished. South Africa may have stumbled through nervy moments against Zimbabwe, but the result keeps their AFCON dream alive. With attacking talent in Foster, Moremi, and Appollis, and the resilience to grind out wins under pressure, Bafana Bafana still possess the tools to go deep into the tournament. The challenge now is to sharpen their focus, cut out defensive lapses, and transform hard-fought survival into a statement of intent in the knockout rounds.
